Correct, SIM cards CAN be disabled and flagged as stolen just like ESN's can be on CDMA networks.

I've never understood the security aspect arguement myself. I was an early US GSM adopter after seeing it in acting in Europe, and I'd never use a device without a accessible SIM. I own 3 phone of different size/functionality/geekness for different occasions. Going from one device to the other is as easy as swapping the SIM.
