Correct, SIM cards CAN be disabled and flagged as stolen just like ESN's
can be on CDMA networks.

My wife's cell was stolen last year with a sim card and once we called
in to AT&T, they shut it off immediately. Of course, the phone could be
used with another sim card, but as long as it isn't ours, we don not
care!

I don't understand it, either. But, they suggest that if a phone is
stolen, they can turn off the phone from anywhere, whereas, with a SIM
card, it can't be done.

Whatever it is to them, its an inhibitor to me. I've never understood
the security aspect arguement myself.

I was an early US GSM adopter after seeing it in acting in Europe, and
I'd never use a device without a accessible SIM.

I own 3 phone of different size/functionality/geekness for different
occasions. Going from one device to the other is as easy as swapping
the SIM.
