I have to agree. I been using APC for almost 15 years. Never had a problem. For our server room, we use a 30KVA Silcon unit. In the 10 years we have had it, we placed the batteries in it twice. We have a tech come out one a year to inspect it, etc..
When we first got the Silcon, the unit did not work. They shipped a replacement and we got it the next day! And if you know how heavy and large those units are, you know it cost some $$$$. For workstations, we use the the Backup Pro 500VAs or 1000VAs. If they can last three to four years, I am happy. Two of the four batteries had swollen and nothing was going to get the battery tray to slide out. What's worse is APC's cabinet design. They put a flange on the top front of the battery tray opening whose only purpose is the make sure you can't get a swollen battery out. And then you have to half-disassemble the whole UPS so you can use a pry bar to remove the batteries out the top, ripping the double-sided tape they use to hold the batteries to the tray. I think APC wants you to throw out the UPS when this happens. Are other UPSs this fiendishly designed? I've been annoyed by APC for the last couple of years on a number of issues and this one has me seriously considering their competitors. Any recommendations?
