I've had this happen a couple of times on the old 3U 3000RMs.  Once I was 
able to pry the batteries out with a pair of screw drivers.  Once I had to 
pull the #@&% out of the rack and remove a bunch of little sheet metal 
screws to get at the swollen batteries.

Our server room has poor cooling, by the way...

Each of our racks has two UPS units.  We re-arranged things so there is a 
1-U gap above and below each UPS.  Not "by the book", but I've not had 
batteries swell since I did this.
