+1 As an architect on a large account (nearly 100K users), I could spend my entire day sitting in a room drawing things on whiteboards and never go near a server again, but I still do training and certification to validate that I have some understanding of how the technology works. Additionally, branching into side areas (e.g., say ITIL or TOGAF or PMP, or a business degree) can make you a more effective "consultant", which is effectively what you become as you move into positions that have more responsibility.

However, I use them as a supplement to experience and in the past, I and several friends have been in situations where it came down to two candidates with similar experience but we had certifications and our competition did not. Currently I am a bit out of date, but am in the process of beginning to update mine just because I can and the economy is picking up. I use certifications as a study guide/roadmap to familiarize myself with a product line or technology. On occasion I find new / better ways to do things then the methods I have been using all along. I don't put much more emphasis then that on them as once I have them they are merely a line on my resume... a line that may help me beat someone else out for that job. If it does that once, it's money well spent. So to those that don't want to play the game, go ahead and don't :) Steven Peck http://www.blkmtn.org On Fri, Mar 4, 2011 at 3:05 PM, Sean Martin <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>> wrote: The most frustrating thing is being constantly praised for your abilities but being held back because of the a lack of a piece of paper.
