I've been in the computer field for nearly 50 years. Before there were
"certs", there was a general shortage of computer people, not to mention
"experienced" people. Back then, I had friends changing jobs every 3 to 6
months to get very nice pay increases. The law of supply and demand
ultimately catches up, and now the computer field is somewhat over crowded.
So, you have a choice. Do you want to make more money, or do you want to
enjoy your job? Titles are meaningless anyway. Studies have confirmed that
most people don't consider themselves underpaid until they stop enjoying
their job. In talking to friends, relatives and co-workers, the great
majority would quit their job if they won the lottery or inherited a
fortune. Nuff said!

I have seen that trend these days, that they are using certifications as a
weeding out process, and folks that are truly qualified for positions, can't
get to them, because they don't have that cert.

But sometimes no matter what you do, you can't convince someone that you are
ready for the next level, even when you have been doing that work for quite
some time, because there are forces at work, that you have not been made
aware of for political/business reasons. I agree when it comes down to that
then there is a lot of reason for frustration.

Best advice is to focus on your skill set, enhance it and plan your next
moves wisely.

An A+?!?! For a senior person?!? I'd run away. I've never had an A+ in my 15
years nor do I have a current MCanything.

David,

These types of scenarios can definitely be frustrating. Especially when it's
acknowledged that you're qualified for the position. I don't mean to sound
like I'm trying to one up you or anything, but I find myself in a similar
predicament. I've been in the field almost as long as you, and with my
current employer going on 10 years. I've been told for the past year (or
longer) that I am more than qualified to be promoted to a Senior Analyst
position. On top of that, I already have the same level of responsbilities,
project load, attend the same meetings, etc. as the existing Senior
Analysts. However, my manager (or their boss) wants to see an updated
certification. My MCP, MCP+I and MCSE are all from NT4 and my CCA is from
Presentation server 4. They'd like to see an MCITP level cert. This
frustrates me because I'm handling the workload of a senior analyst,my
vacation requests are scrutinized because of their lack of providing
cross-training opportunities leaves me the ony resident "expert" on a number
of key systems, yet I can't "officially" handle the new title until I obtain
a new cert. With all of that said, they've clearly outlined to me what it
will take to be promoted and I have yet to meet those requirements. In the
end, I have no one else to blame but myself. I'll admit that my family life
takes presedence over my desire to study. Of course the recent straw that is
about to break the camels back is the fact that they recently added an A+
cert to my list of existing training requirements....but anyway, I digress.

If it's not clear to you what is required to be promoted, ask for
clarification. If you feel that the requirements don't warrant the results,
it may be time to start looking for other opportunities.

I asked for a promotion to Sr. Systems Engineer but I have been denied.
Talking to my boss she feels I am qualified but her boss disagrees not
because I dont fit the roles and skill set of a Sr. SE as listed in our job
description, but because she wants to see more broad scoped project
proposals. Yeah sorry that my evaluation of products used across the
enterprise for encrypting our laptops (chose PGP), remote access (went with
RDS), 3rd party patching (Shavlik), and then doing the work of standing up
the servers and installing configuring, deploying and then handing off of
said items all in the last 12 months isnt broad enough

Youre really great at what you do and you meet the job description but its
not enough, sorry. Some of you guys can relate, right? Ive only been doing
IT professionally for 16 yearsand admin-y stuff for 12 of that.
