Yes, it would certainly make the Mari<->Nuke bridge much cleaner.

I was a bit hasty in saying the existing shading system could do it - I doubt 
the current shading calls can support ptex's per-face uvs without modification. 
 The ptex reader needs the face index and the barycentric coordinate which is 
missing from the current VertexContext structure (as of 7.0 that is.)
But that info certainly exists at shading time so the renderer can provide it 
to the shading system in the future with minor changes to the VertexContext.
