A few people have asked me for something more than just a mailing list for
communication within the NuPIC community. I don't want to move towards a
forum like phpbb, but it's true that most open source projects grow out of
their mailing list after some time. There will always be crucial
communication here on the mailing list, especially topical discussions,
theoretical questions, and important collaboration efforts. It will
probably never be replaced with another online venue. But we need to think
about expansion, and especially for simple Q/A, stackoverflow makes a lot
of sense.

Some of our biggest roadblocks are the technical problems facing newbies
who want to build and run NuPIC within their environment. It's true that we
have wiki pages set up to help out with this. But I think people will be
more likely to interact on SO than update a wiki page, especially if they
have knowledge to add to a given Q/A session (it makes them feel smart).
Wiki edits seem anonymous, but SO is not.

Our wiki is very important, and I don't want to stretch ourselves too thin
with our content delivery. But I don't think encouraging people to start
asking nupic questions on SO is a bad idea.

Keep in mind that if all goes according to plan, questions will start being
asked on SO organically as NuPIC gains in popularity. We can actually help
foster this by starting to use it now, which will engage anyone already
looking for answers there and encourage more questions.
