This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of October 12, 2020 Highlights: ----------- RED-THROATED LOON GREAT EGRET TUNDRA SWAN BRANT CACKLING GOOSE EURASIAN WIGEON SANDHILL CRANE BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER HUDSONIAN GODWIT WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER PARASITIC JAEGER AMERICAN PIPIT RED-HEADED WOODPECKER FISH CROW GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER LINCOLN’S SPARROW LAPLAND LONGSPUR SNOW BUNTING EVENING GROSBEAK COMMON REDPOLL RED CROSSBILL Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC) ------------ 10/13: An early SNOW BUNTING was seen on the Wildlife Drive. 10/14: An EURASIAN WIGEON and a late OSPREY were seen on the Wildlife Drive. 10/17: 50 SANDHILL CRANES and a late GREAT EGRET were seen from VanDyne Spoor Road. A LINCOLN’S SPARROW was found at Howland Island. 2 CACKLING GEESE were seen from East Road. An EURASIAN WIGEON was again seen along the Wildlife Trail. 12 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS were seen at the Visitor’s Center. An EVENING GROSBEAK was heard in flight along the Wildlife Drive. 10/18: A CACKLING GOOSE and a BAIRD’S SANDPIPER were seen on the Wildlife Drive. 83 SANDHILL CRANES were counted at Knox-Marsellus Pool. Cayuga county ------------ 10/13: An immature RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was at a feeder at the corner of Jordan Road and Fire Lane Road north of Jordan. 10/17: A PARASITIC JAEGER was seen over Lake Ontario from Sterling Nature Center. 80 BRANT, 3 SNOW BUNTINGS and an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER were all found at West Barrier Bar Park in Fair Haven. 10/18: 58 BRANT were seen from West Barrier Bar Park. Onondaga County ------------ RED CROSSBILLS continue in good numbers at the corner of Shakham Road and Herlihy Road in the Morgan Hill State Forest just north of the Cortland County line. 10/12: 2 EVENING GROSBEAKS were heard near the Marshy Spits area on the southwest area of Onondaga Lake. 10/13: An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER and a RED-THROATED LOON were seen from the West Shore Trail of Onondaga Lake. A GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH was seen in the Morgan Hill State Forest. 10/14: 2 CACKLING GEESE were found at Van Buren Park in Baldwinsville. A BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER was seen along the West Shore Trail on Onondaga Lake. 10/16: An estimated 50 AMERICAN PIPITS were seen on Hoag Road south of Baldwinsville. Over the nest few days estimates were as high as 500 of these birds. 10/18; 6 EVENING GROSBEAKS were at a feeder on Lawrence Road south of Marcellus. Oswego County ------------ 10/13: 2 HUDSONIAN GODWITS continue at the outlet of Sandy Pond on Lake Ontario. 10/14: the 2 HUDSONIAN GODWITS and an early LAPLAND LONGSPUR were seen at the outlet of Sandy Pond. 10/16: A WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER along with 15 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, 3 SANDERLING and 72 DUNLIN were all seen at the outlet of Sandy Pond. 10/17: 2 COMMON REDPOLLS were seen on Thelma Road near Central Square. Madison County ------------ 10/16: 2 TUNDRA SWANS were seen on Woodman Pond north of Hamilton and have continued through today. 10/17: A CACKLING GOOSE was found on Woodman Pond. 10/18: 3 EVENING GROSBEAKS were seen on Clark Road near Lakeport. Oneida County ------------ 10/14: A late OSPREY was seen from Pennystreet Road in Rome. 10/17: 2 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS were seen at Delta Lake State park. Herkimer County ------------ 10/12: 4 BLACK VULTURES were seen near Little Falls. 10/16: 6 EVENING GROSBEAKS were at a feeder in Salisbury Corners north of Dolgeville. 10/17: 2 EVENING GROSBEAKS were at a feeder on the Military Road north of Dolgeville. 1 FISH CROW was noted at a residence in Salisbury Corners.
