This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of November 23, 2020 Highlights: ----------- RED-THROATED LOON GREAT EGRET GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE CACKLING GOOSE BLACK SCOTER SURF SCOTER BLACK VULTURE PURPLE SANDPIPER WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER SANDHILL CRANE ICELAND GULL LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL SHORT-EARED OWL LONG-EARED OWL RED-HEADED WOODPECKER NORTHERN SHRIKE MARSH WREN ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER EVENING GROSBEAK COMMOM REDPOLL HOARY REDPOLL WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL RED CROSSBILL Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC) ------------ 11/24: 4 SHORT-EARED OWLS were seen at Carncross Road. 11/25: A late WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER was at the Visitor’s Center and remained to the 29th. 11:27 1 SHORT-EARED OWL was seen at Carncross Road. 11/28: A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was at the Visitor’s Center and was seen the next day also. 7 DUNLIN were also at the Visitor’s Center. A late MARSH WREN was heard along the Wildlife Drive. 80 SANDHILL CRANES and 2 SHORT-EARED OWLS were seen at Carncross Road. Cayuga County ------------ 11/23: A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen at West Barrier Bar in Fair Haven. 11/27: 2 PURPLE SANDPIPERS, 2 RED-THROATED LOONS, 1 EVENING GROSBEAK and 14 COMMON REDPOLLS were seen at Fair Haven State Park. Onondag County -------------- Large numbers of RED CROSSBILLS and smaller nimbers of WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS continue throughout the week at Shakham Road in the Morgan Hill State forest. 11/24: A SANDHILL CRANE and a CACKLING GOOSE were seen near the Adath Yeshuren Cemetery in Syracuse. A ROSS’S GOOSE was found on Tracey Lake near Tully. 3 BLACK SCOTERS and a GREAT EGRET were seen from the West Shore Trail on Onondaga Lake. A PINE GROSBEAK was seen at the Morgan Hill State forest. 11/25: 4 RED-THROATED LOONS were seen from the West Shore Trail of Onondaga Lake. 11/26: A late ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was seen near the dock on the West Shore Trail of Onondaga Lake and was seen through the 29th. 11/27: A PINE GROSBEAK was seen at the Hill ‘n Dale Golf Course near the Morgan Hill State Forest. A HOARY REDPOLL, 3 BLACK SCOTERS, an ICELAND GULL,8 RED-THROATED LOONS and a RED-NECKED GREBE were all seen from the West Shore Trail of Onondaga Lake. 11/28: A GOLDEN EAGLE was seen at the Morgan Hill State Forest. A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen near the duck Blind at Three Rivers WMA north of Baldwinsville.A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was seen on Melo Circle in Clay. 11/29: A LONG-EARED OWL was seen at Morgan Hill State Forest. Oswego County ------------ EVENING GROSBEAKS were reported in numerous places. Keep your feeders full and keep an eye out. 11/24: 2 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen with Ceders on Nine Mile Point Road on Lake Ontario. 3 PURPLE SANDPIPERS were seen at Sunset Bay Town Park at the Boat Launch. 11/25: 26 RED CROSSBILLS were seen on the Richland-Selkirk east trail near Selkirk Shores State Park. 11/27: 13 BLACK SCOTERS were seen from the bluffs at Derby Hill. 2 SURF-SCOTERS were seen on Lake Ontario from the end of Rainbow Shores Road. Madison County ------------- Like Oswego County EVENING GROSBEAKS were seen in many wild areas and feeders. 11/25: 5 PINE GROSBEAKS were on Damon Road near New Woodstock. 11/27: A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen at Nelson Swamp south of Cazenovia. 11/28: HOARY REDPOLLS were noted at Ditchbank Road north of Canastota and the Fenner Wind Farm. 11/29: A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen from Ditchbank Road. A SHORT-EARED OWL was seen on Burleson Road south of Canestota.
