This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of October 05, 2020 Highlights: ----------- BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON BRANT CACKLING GOOSE EURASIAN WIGEON SANDHILL CRANE AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER HUDSONIAN GODWIT WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER SORA PARASITIC JAEGER LONG-TAILED JAEGER PHILADELPHIA VIREO GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH AMERICAN PIPIT ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER LINCOLN’S SPARROW NELSON’S SPARROW LAPLAND LONGSPUR EVENING GROSBEAK RED CROSSBILL Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC) ------------ 10/5: A PHILADELPHIA VIREO was seen on East Road. An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was seen at Marten’s Tract. 3BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were found at the Morgan Road Marshes. 10/8: An EURASIAN WIGEON was seen along the Wildlife Drive and was found the following day. 10/9: A LINCOLN’S SPARROW was seen along the Wildlife Drive. 44 SANDHILL CRANES and a BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON were seen at East Road. 10/10: A NELSON’S SPARROW was found on Howland Island. A LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER was reported at the Visitor’s Center. 53 SANDHILL CRANES were seen at Knox-Marsellus Marsh. 10/11: ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS were seen at the visitor’s Center and Towpath Road. Cayuga County ------------ 10/5: 2 LAPLAND LONGSPURS were seen on the break wall at West Barrier Bar park in Fair Haven. A GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH was seen at Fair Haven State Park. 10/11: A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER continues at Fair Haven State Park. A LINCOLN’S SPARROW was seen also. Onondaga County --------------- 10/9: A BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was seen on the creek walk between Hiawatha Blvd. and Onondaga Lake in Syracuse. 10/10: A GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH was seen on Bennet Ave. in Syracuse. 10/11: An IBIS found at Lakeview Point on Onondaga Lake still cannot be positively ID’d as GLOSSY or WHITE FACED. A late SORA was also seen at Lakeview Point. Upwards of 15 RED CROSSBILLS are still present on Shakham Road in the Morgan Hill State Forest. 2 CACKLING GEESE and 2 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were found at Van Buren Park in Baldwinsville. A large number of AMERICAN PIPITS numbering in the hundreds were seen on Hoag Road south of Baldwinsville. They were present again today. Oswego County ------------ 10/5: At the outlet of Sandy Pond on Lake Ontario 7 species of shorebirds were seen including WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER HUDSONIAN GODWIT and AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER. 10/6: A SNOW GOOSE was seen from Bishop Road north of Pulaski. 10/7: A stellar day at Derby Hill with a LONG-TAILED JAEGER, 3 PARASITIC JAEGERS and 2 RED PHALAROPES being recorded. 10/9: A HUDSONIAN GODWIT continued at the Sandy Pond outlet. A RED-NECKED GREBE was seen at Derby Hill. 10/10: A GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH was seen in Hastings at a private residence. 10/11: An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was found at the fishingnaccess site in Brewerton. 19 EASTERN MEADOWLARKS were seen on Bishop Road. Oneida County -------------- 10/9: A LAPLAND LONGSPUR and 2 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS were seen at Delta lake State Park. 10/10: 5 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS and 5 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were seen at Delta Lake State Park.
