This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of September 21, 2020 Highlights: ----------- BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING DUCK(Extralimital) AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER HUDSONIAN GODWIT WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER BAIRD’S SANDPIPER STILT SANDPIPER COMMON NIGHTHAWK YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER PHILADELPHIA VIREO GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER LAPLAND LONGSPUR PINE SISKIN Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC) ------------ 9/21: A BAIRD’S SANDPIPER was seen at the Visitor’s Center. 9/22: 3 HUDSONIAN GODWITS were discovered at thvisitor’s Center and have been present through 9/27. They have not been reported today as of yet. 9/23: A LAPLAND LONGSPUR was found at VanDyne Spoor road. 9/24: 9 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were seen at the visitor’s Center along with an AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER and a WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER. 3 SANDHILL CRANES were seen at Marten’s Tract. 9/26: A BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was seen along the Wildlife Drive. 2 STILT SANDPIPERS were seen at the Visitor’s Center. 9/27: 12 Warbler species including an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER were seen on Howland Island. Also seen was a GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH. 4 STILT SANDPIPERS were found at the Visitor’s Center. 15 SANDHILL CRANES, 4 AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS and a PHILADELPHIA VIREO were seen at VanDyne Spoor Road. Cayuga county ------------ 9/26: 2 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS were seen at Fair Haven State Park. Onondaga County ------------ 9/22: A SANDERLING was again seen at Oneida Shores County Park. 9/23: A BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER was seen on the West Shore Trail of Onondaga Lake. 9/26: A GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH was seen at Three Rivers WMA north of Baldwinsville. 9/27: 5 PINE SISKINS were seen at Oneida Shores County Park. An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was seen at Three Rivers WMA. Oswego County ------------ 9/24: 3 HUDSONIAN GODWITS were found at the Sandy Pond Outlet on Lake Ontario and were present through the 27th. An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was found on Luther Road is West Monroe. 9/25: An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, a GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH and an AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER were all seen at the Sandy Pond Outlet. 9/26: 9 species of shorebirds including the afore mentioned HUDSONIAN GODWITS were seen at the Sandy Pond Outlet. Other shorebirds included BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, SEMI-PALMATED PLOVER, SANDERLING, DUNLIN, LEAST SANDPIPER, PECTORAL SANDPIPER and GREATER YELLOWLEGS. 9/27: 9 Shorebird species remained at the Sandy Pond Outlet. Madison County ------------- 9/22: A YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER was seen on Preston Hill Road near Hamilton. 9/25: A PHILADELPHIA VIREO was seen on White Haven RoadEast of Lakeport. 9/26: A BAIRD’S SANDPIPER was seen at the Madison Street Impoundment north of Hamilton. Oneida County ------------ 9/23: A WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER and an AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER were seen at Delta Lake and continued through 9/26. Also seen her were 6 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS and 4 other shorebird species. A FISH CROW was found at Triangle Park in Rome. Herkimer County ------------ 9/21: An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was seen at the intersection of Albany and Soncody Roads near West Winfield. Extralimital ------------ A BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING DUCK continues at the wetland on Hile School Road near Dryden in Tompkins County.
