Ah, but my Bumper Book of Words (aka Oxford Dictionary of English 2nd edition) 
says:

Invoice, noun, a list of goods sent or services provided, with a statement of 
the sum due for these; a bill.

Although it does say it comes from the French and the French root word does 
indeed translate as "send".
