Natcoll often consult with people within the industry. I believe that some
handsome mohawked chap recommended that they start introducing their students
to MVC frameworks such as CodeIgniter ;)

I don't think that it's a case about teaching language x or y. It's about
encouraging passion about the industry, teaching people how to teach themselves
and teaching general programming ideas without being so tied to a specific
language.

NZ has way more dot-net devs than jobs thanks to the education system here, and
most end up on help desks and in generic IT roles. The dot-net and Java devs
come out of education knowing only how to do their niche, and pretty much only
when supported by large infrastructures and corporate software licenses.

Berend: I've been doing PHP for 12 or 13 years, but only 5 of that has been
commercial. And the first 5-7 years was certainly not what I would consider to
be commercially acceptable. However, I did recently do a code review on an
outsourced project (contractors in Russia and Sri Lanka) and it looked like
High Schooler PHP so maybe anything is commercially acceptable these days if
it's cheap enough.

Kind regards,
Keri Henare
