Well - our favourite document, the HTA, doesn't mention bicycle lanes at
all. There is the power to designate lanes "for slowly moving traffic,
traffic moving in a particular direction or classes or types of vehicles"
{154.(1)(c)}, which requires designation(!) and signs.

Although it doesn't specifically state so, I believe that this refers to the
white/black diamond signs (for classes of vehicles), and the white/black
arrows for designating lanes for particular directions.

This leaves us with three different classes of bicycle "lanes":
1.      Lanes designated in the manner above (very rare in Ottawa);
2. Typical Ottawa bicycle lanes that would seem to exist in a legal
        vacuum; and
3.      Paved shoulders.

When you say "for use specifically by bicycles", do you mean that other
vehicles would be excluded? - ie Class 1 as described above. If so, I
think, as noted before, that we have very few of these.

Interesting. I would have considered at least some of these, or some
stretches of them, to be bicycle lanes of the Class 2 variety. Although it
is true that some of them were paved shoulders before they gained their
bicycle logos.
