Yes, "Everybody loves Raymond", sure do, he's funny and charming and often gets his point, moral or idea across to all.
Everyone loves an English Pub, it's a good vibe, a few drinks, meet some good guys and gals, and off we go. Coming into this debate is very tricky, but as noted to Doug, I would follow up. Henk, the OCA representative is the best suited to make a response, and will leave it for him to do. Business pressure, and volunteer time to spend hours of reply or motivation re liquor related matters in Obs, however takes its toll on one, but sure he will fit a reply soon. Obs carries a heavy load of poor liquor establishment etiquette, legally they can trade but gravely exceed their bounds. For most of you, you have no touch with the hassles, not of the pubs, clubs or 'restaurants', but with the authorities who have to protect you and me of noise, urinating around every corner door or wall, loud shouting whist walking to their residences across Obs, fights, damages to cars or properties, beer bottles dumped or smashed, will drink till they drop, but with the authorities who are not there when you call on them, do not quite deliver what they supposed to do, turns communities and Legal entities around and give the liquor establishments the right of way to proceed! Unless you are deprived of your sleep or sanity, Raymond is a fine guy, thumbs up for him, but wait till Raymond laughs behind your house. So, is the above re the bad places, the crawly dingy ones, yes but no, not quite. I refer to the nice establishments, sometimes the small neat or cozy ones, the ones who supposedly does Observatory residents a favour by staying open way late beyond their trading hours or takes a chance more than often - but spills out their well inebriated patron/s to get into his/her vehicle and drive off or becomes a victim for a robbery or cannot contain his/her bladder or vomits into your flower pot or behind your wall or at your gate; allows a DJ or two or a talented musician to make music which can be heard two to three blocks away; or allows only neatly dressed patrons but who's thump of music can be heard 250 meters away; or you neither know if the patron is well drunk or drugged but plays ball all round; I can go on, but... Promises by liquor applicants are often made but poorly kept, motivations in applications on paper are the finest but on the ground becomes flawed in practice, once given a licence it becomes near impossible to reverse, the Law itself seems to get reversed because the business perpetrator is considered above the affected resident, time and time again, and this is no joke! An English Pub for Raymond being an American is possibly out of sorts In South Africa. It's nice if we can run an English pub in Observatory with an English Liquor Board, a Bobby on patrol with his baton in hand to visit her Majesty's pub and with a stiff upper lip, check in that all is in place at the pub and with it's patrons then popping on further down the road and see the little o'l Tannie off to her abode at 11 pm after her nice little snort at her lekker Local pub. Folks, I wish Lions Corner well but if Lion's Corner has all its ducks in a row, well then. I however disagree to widen the footprint of liquor into the corridors of the residential domain in Observatory, and will give it my best attention, both for and against as "Everybody Loves Observatory ".
