Trevor, my humble apologies. I certainly wasn't aware of your personal
circumstances regarding reporting of crime, and yes I am aware of
insurance fraud. What I meant is the mundane stuff that forms most of
what I report in via whatsapp to OBSID that doesn't necessitate a police
case number. Stuff that would help them to realise which area is being
targeted for what, like the attempted break-in at my house about 2 weeks
ago. No-one benefits from falsely reporting things like that. And
perhaps I was thinking more along the lines of the attempted rape on me,
which most certainly did require a case number in the event I ever see
him again. That would allow SAPS to arrest him. But in my particular
street, the majority of my neighbours have been victims of crime to some
degree, the most serious being the man who was stabbed 5 times in his
home in January, and sadly the minority have reported their crimes.
That doesn't give anyone any idea of what it really is like living here.
If I had known how prevalent crime is in my street, I would not have
moved here. And having said all this, I have actually seen the OBSID
reports which are quite informative.

Trevor I think it works both ways. Their stats can only be as good as we
want them to be. So if you want accuracy then reporting is essential. It's
absurd that you think people would make crime up. For what reason? If you
have ever been a victim of crime, you would know it's preposterous to
suggest such.
I think you and others have misunderstood me or I did not make myself
clear enough.
But its not preposterous to make up crimes - just ask any insurance company!
If you have to go to a police station to report a crime its a
commitment and unless you were truly affected you would not consider
this - unless of course you were committing the crime of fraud as I
mentioned above.
You obviously did not consider my statement when I went to the
Woodstock police station to report malicious damage to my car and they
threatened me with reporting a false crime. That they would even thing
that is preposterous - or is it?
Much easier to make false or inaccurate claims over reasonably
anonymous email - especially if this would result in some other other
action taking place - like increased patrols or the positioning of a
horsebox etc.
Just because you would not do it does not meant there are people that
would not! People making up crime happens all the time - there is
nothing absurd about it, except the act of doing it!
