Am aware of it, as I am aware that it is long way from a usable release.

ArcInfo is *THE* owner of the GIS market and a mammoth tool. In GIS world
you buy hardware to run Arcinfo not the other way round. ArcInfo actually
runs (is based) on Unix platforms but not Linux. Its full port to NT is causing us
and many other to head down NT. While ESRI are still committed to the Unix version
in their press releases, we note that various bits, addons of the next release, wont be
available on the Unix platform - reason: COM.
Atlas was tongue-in-cheek. It's not inhouse at all, but definitely specialised. If you
are
writing a specialty program for tiny vertical market, the preponderance of windows
drives you to write for windows. Most people has need for one or two such programs
for work and that is big plus for Microsoft.

Umm, I dont use Access to chuck SQL around. I have Oracle et al for that. I
use Access as front end for reporting, forms etc. and basically even with Delphi
its hard to beat access for throwing togather a database app in hurry (and of
course, I use both). Access isnt without problems but I havent seen anything
else come close. Interbase, MySQL dont even have client end in Access
sense. DB2, Oracle Forms for client development YE-UCCKKK! Are you serious?
Star Office is new to me... I'll have a look and let you know.
