Some places have different names depending on what language you are talking in. So it may have an English name as well as a local name, both forms are correct, and pronunciation may be the only difference, or the names could be quite different in spelling. Pa-riss is English, Paree is French. Gothenburg is English, Gvteborg (yur-ta-boree I think) is Swedish.
So, is it fair to say that Whangarei is pronounced Wong-ga-ray in English?
