If the agreed spoken language of France then became English, then sure it would be Paris.
So when you use the following words in conversation, how do you pronounce them?
Paris, Spain,
Wales,
Japan
I would expect you to say Paree, Espania, Cyrmu, Nippon (possible spelling mistakes not withstanding!) because that's the way they are said in the local tongue so, by your argument, must be how they are said ;-)
Also Aluminium, Tomato, Schedule.
Rather than setting the rule : You must say Paree if you say Awe-a-ma-roo, it is probably easier to settle on a pronunciation that is most suited to all participants on a conversation-by-conversation basis. Thus the 'Nooz' settles on the pronunciation that have the least number of officious^H^H^H^Hial complaints, and the most vocal supporters.
And at least email pronunciation of Maori (Oamaru = Oamaru) is easier than email spelling of Welsh names ;) (and notice in the RWC the number of Joneses in the Welsh rugby team? Its like the country en masse opted out of keeping up with the Joneses, deciding if you can't beat them: join them).
