Okay, for the sake of argument, let's say that the person in my example moves to Paris with all his relations, buys most of the land, steals most of what's left, shoots a few of the locals when they try to complain (allthough they haven't yet realised that the court is a more profitable method than the gun), decides he's never going to bother with that heathen french mumbo jumbo, but he can't be bothered renaming the damn place, and continues calling the city Paris, and teaches the same to his children, who teach their children, is the correct pronuciation still Paree, because that's what the French named it?
Not that I'm saying that that sort of thing happened in New Zealand of course. I didn't want to draw parallels that might not be accurate :-) My reply is tongue in cheek, but I still feel that if a place name is Maori, then it should be pronounced in Maori. -----Original Message----- From: James Sugrue [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, November 17 2003 1:33 p.m. To: Multiple recipients of list offtopic Subject: RE: [DUG-OFFTOPIC]: RE: How do you spell Delphi? Ah but your argument falls over because the person in your argument is not a born and breed local of Paris, and if they were, they would say "Paree" which is of course the correct pronunciation. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Allan, Samuel Sent: Monday, 17 November 2003 12:50 p.m. To: Multiple recipients of list offtopic Subject: [DUG-OFFTOPIC]: RE: How do you spell Delphi? Are they maori names? Because if they are, then surely the locals when they were named were maori? So surely the maori pronunciation is correct? And the current locals simply can't even pronounce the name of their own town right :-) That's like going to live in Paris then saying that seeing as you are now a local, and you say it Paris then that is correct pronunciation, never mind that the French say it Paree. (Or differently from me anyway). So unless they are not maori names, then the maori pronunciation is correct, and good on the TV presenters for trying. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ --- New Zealand Delphi Users group - Offtopic List - [EMAIL PROTECTED] Website: http://www.delphi.org.nz To UnSub, send email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] with body of "unsubscribe offtopic" Web Archive at: http://www.mail-archive.com/offtopic%40delphi.org.nz/ --------------------------------------------------------------------------- New Zealand Delphi Users group - Offtopic List - [EMAIL PROTECTED] Website: http://www.delphi.org.nz To UnSub, send email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] with body of "unsubscribe offtopic" Web Archive at: http://www.mail-archive.com/offtopic%40delphi.org.nz/
