The problem with Maori language is that every tribe had it own dialect as a
result of a decision by a group from one tribe - smallish but full of
political activist - they have rammed their pronunciation on to everyone -
regardless of correctness. Some words are regional only but have been
mangled by the generic PC pronunciation. It is a minefield that caused major
disputes amongst Maori tribes in pre & early European times and because it
is PC no one is allowed to question it.

- my hobby horse, you may have guessed

Are they maori names? Because if they are, then surely the locals when
they were named were maori? So surely the maori pronunciation is
correct? And the current locals simply can't even pronounce the name of
their own town right :-)

That's like going to live in Paris then saying that seeing as you are
now a local, and you say it Paris then that is correct pronunciation,
never mind that the French say it Paree. (Or differently from me
anyway).

So unless they are not maori names, then the maori pronunciation is
correct, and good on the TV presenters for trying.

The last borland thing I went to, Richard Vowles was calling it 'i'.
Thats why I thought it must have been the offical line.
