7200 rpm HDD... I only buy fast laptops so it has pretty much everything maxed out for when I bought it last year.
Interesting to see some people are quite happy with Vista for development. These are computers that you have had Vista installed for a while then? Did you start with SP1 or upgrade to it? Out of curiosity do you guys who enjoy Vista shut your PC down fully each night? I usually just hibernate and then reboot properly maybe once a week because booting from scratch takes so much longer than XP did. It is possible I haven't turned enough things off and that is why it is slow (though it is not cool that you have to configure things so much just to try to get back to XP like performance!). It could also be because I hammer it pretty hard with a several big Outlook psts, WinAmp, several database programs (query analyser, profiler) plus Delphi and the Perforce client usually all open at once. Having said that my usage patterns were pretty similar on the slower XP machine last year (I guess the outlook files have got bigger?). In my old laptop going from a 5400 rpm drive to a 7200 rpm drive made a huge difference. You can now get 10,000 rpm 2.5 inch HDDs - but I can't justify the price to myself. There are also a few laptops that support Raid - but these are not really laptops (they tend to cook your upper legs while cutting circulation to your lower legs).
