Having a fast HDD in your laptop makes a big difference.  In my old 
laptop going from a 5400 rpm drive to a 7200 rpm drive made a huge 
difference.  You can now get 10,000 rpm 2.5 inch HDDs - but I can't 
justify the price to myself.  There are also a few laptops that support 
Raid - but these are not really laptops (they tend to cook your upper 
legs while cutting circulation to your lower legs).
