Alister I'm not sure where you get this from, Raid 1 allows split reads, so it 'can' double your read bandwidth (your write bandwidth is of course the same as you have to flush to both disks) Having said that it depends on where the limiting factor is in your input stream, disk, interface, controller etc ie if your limiting factor was your disk controller then no it doesn't give any benefit.
