From the numerous bug reports people file whenever 3D acceleration doesn't work immediately after install. A significant majority of the users installing OpenSolaris expect compiz, etc. to work, and for other functionality to be present. > In your response you compare ubuntu linux with opensolaris.. Products designed by committee usually fail to be delivered on time and are rarely successful. The OpenSolaris community is primarily a meritocracy; that means that the people that do the work get to make most of the decisions. That does not mean that community feedback or ideas aren't important, but ultimately the people doing the work have to make the decisions based on that feedback. That feedback is why 3D acceleration is currently important, and I don't see that changing from what I understand. > It's how many years later and how much progress has happened? We're all in this together; there is no "us vs. them." > How much closed source is acceptable for OpenSolaris? This discussion has already happened in the past. My personal belief is that we use as much open source as is practical and only use binaries where necessary, and that's basically what is happening right now. > What is the most important direction for OpenSolaris? > a) server > b) desktop > c) developer workstation All three, because users demand all three :) Cheers, -- Shawn Walker
