Illustrations are not the only issue.  Descriptive text is also proscribed.

Since the Slayer's Guide was met with such a laissez-faire attitude, I'm
tempted to write a two-line description for every monster in the SRD and
release them all as one-part OGL works.  Then wait for WotC to tell me to
correct my breach of license for any they don't like.  I bet it wouldn't
take me more than an evening or two to write, and it would make the SRD MUCH
more useful.

The million dollar question is: would any commercial publishers use them?
Or would they rather avoid the risk?
