Well, endless complaining about what you don't have is close enough to wanting
more free stuff in my mind...not that that was my point at all. I don't care
if they did or didn't want more free stuff. You seem to be conflating my
response with a long running flame war here on the list- a flame war my
response was only tangentially related to.

Not many people do.

"I'm fat, I'm stupid, and I can't write for crap." <---isn't common.

The "problem" I was responding to was one person's claim that, since the
Illithid wasn't included in full, they couldn't replicate a good gaming moment
from 20 years ago.

In general, if what you liked was the feeling of being scared, then you should
be able to recreate it without using the Illithid. If you can't, you lack
creativity. Period.

[description of the "actual" problem snipped]

>Why bother to include an Illithiad in the SRD in the first place.

To show you what can be done? To include the seeds for your own creativity?
To provide yet another example of how to calculate the ever problematic CR? To
give you some unique abilities you can use or you can be inspired by? Because
every other monster in the 3e MM was included, so why cut this one entirely?

>Bottom line: The issue is the opposite of having insufficient creative ability

I disagree.

"I can't have the Illithid...this sucks...I can't write modules."

Whose problem is this? If the lack of one monster stops you from writing
modules, then you need to move to another industry. (Either that, or drop the
exagerrated claim that no Illithids = no possibility of ever writing 3rd Ed.
modules).

So WOTC didn't give you everything? Ah, poor baby. Cowboy up, create
something else frightening, something new, something never before seen. Why is
that hard to understand?

>If you're going to have a creature in your module named an "Illithiad"

You can't, it's not in the SRD (which is what sparked this argument in the
first place.

>you're better off simply saying something like "There is an Illithiad here",

Actually, you're better off doing something new. There is nothing compelling
you to use Mind Flayers. Nothing at all. Lots of great modules- even great,
scary modules- that don't use them. If you feel you can't use them, them
don't. Do something new.

I get it, WOTC won't let you use Illithids from DnD. Okay, deal with it.
Nothing about that is crippling to a new campaign world or a new module.
