Yea, serial and video emulation would be needed.

ethernet could be enough, console can't be used if too many server are on
the same space, but one console could be connected to many of this board

Input/output look like different kind of sensor and a connection to the

Yes, it is pretty much a small pc that runs as a watchdog.  The minimum goal would be something that lets you remote install an operating system on a server. IPMI 2.0 and Drac 4 is a good place to start for features.  I would eventually like this to be brought down to a single chip that could be included on a motherboard.  I pretty much envision a very low cost server platform this could be a part of. 


As another idea, how difficult would it be to make a new southbridge for an opteron?  If we incorperated all of this remote management stuff into it and provided a system for doing native vitual devices (serial,sata,video,audio,etc) over ethernet you could make very small format opteron machines.  All you would need is power and ethernet going to it. Hell we could probably get google to fund it since they are all about high density clusters.
