I don't think there's anything wrong with the part numbers, but I do think that some sort of memorable trademarks should be thought up instead of generic names like Free Software Drivers But Open Hardware Graphics Card (I didn't want to pick on anybody). Liberty's a good word, less confusion than free. The alternative is to use the project to make people think about the dual meaning of the word free, by using it in a way where the free of cost definition clearly doesn't apply, like in free hardware. Again though, I don't think free and hardware mix well from a marketing standpoint.
Really, what matters is that this project is compatible with the goals of the FSF, and that should be taken advantage of by both parties. Perhaps, Timothy, you can point Richard Stallman to this thread and see what advice he has. My opinion is that even if he takes a hardline stance, his views are pretty clearly thought out. Perhaps he can offer up some ideas about the name change. On the other hand, I don't think changing the project's name is a fair demand, but changing texts that describe the project to reference free software rather than open source would be a significant improvement, and pretty much obligatory in the face of an FSF endorsement. _______________________________________________ Open-graphics mailing list [email protected] http://lists.duskglow.com/mailman/listinfo/open-graphics List service provided by Duskglow Consulting, LLC (www.duskglow.com)
