What we avoid here is encoding a specific PREFERRED_VERSION for the kernel directly into the autobuilder configuration. There are other ways we could achieve that but we will need some kind of metadata unless we really want to have autobuilder config in lockstep with the metadata. So yes, I agree but there is a reason we did this and it hasn't gone.
