Bob,

I'm 100.00% sure, Moinak did not propose that.
You misunderstood him, plus do him wrong (and any other Distributors).

Moinak has well summarized a few points, that I did not express so good
(because I took them for granted, for example: That only C++ code is affected,
and only when compiled with SUNWspro).
His summary is a useful addition to this thread.

BTW, the OS is SunOS 5.x, the ENVIRONMENT is Solaris2.x .
And I - personally - am very happy, it does not depend on the Java "installer"
thing.

And that's not only my personal (and many other folk's) feeling, but facts: You
can bypass the use of JAVA completely and still install SunOS 5.10 or 5.11 in
several ways.
For example, if you install it in text mode, i.e. via serial console (not
totally sure, but there should normally be no single call of java in text mode,
though I didn't verify this with suninstall [as it is not yet redistributable
{!} ]).

Not to mention any sort of manual installation (whether directly SVR4-pkgadd
[rather than script- or even java driven], bfu based, with star, cpio or
whatever).
SunOS does not necessarily depend on JAVA and this is very good so.

Please, do not blame Moinak or his grand Belenix (see his speed-improved
read-ahead hsfs io scheduler, or his zlib-capable lofiadm [which therefore
supports lofiadm'ing compressed iso files]) - don't blame him - for something,
that in fact SUNW's current (NON)redistribution policies have to be blamed for!
You are totally turning around the chain of causation: Of course would Moinak
(and Joerg Schilling and myself) enjoy any further added [open or closed, but
redistributable] code, but he is not __allowed __ to do that.

BTW, the problematic of defining what an OS is (or what belongs to the it) is a
vague and wide field.
Nothing against JAVA, but in my opinion, JAVA does not belong to the OS.
It is a userland application.
Admittedly an important one.
But things like smc are a buggy and sluggish pain.

And in terms of CD/DVD read performance, or support of compressed iso images,
SUNW's Solaris Express would be *well advised* to take Belenix "as standard".

Thanks.
