Thank you all, Gentlemen, for your prompt responses. I was unaware that cdrecord already does so much. I have used cdrecord in the past (built by myself) when you needed to get a special cdrecord pro dvd to burn dvds and then cdrw seemed a much easier (as it is built-in) way to go.
As a by-product of this thread, I would like to say that I miss a howto repository (as there is in Linux) or a knowledge base (as Microsoft offers for their products) for such common knowledge that one must become aware of before one can fully appreciate the beauty of OpenSolaris. Sometimes I miss so much a feature and it is right there before my eyes, but I just can't see it because I don't know it exists or where to search. Going further, I would rather have a very well documented list of available OpenSolaris packages all with descriptions and information on each pkg so that one can choose what to install than having old versions of so many open source packages that are not as useful anymore as their latest releases. I would rather have OpenSolaris be a very small core from which you can select and install packages knowing what they are used for than an immense bundle of packages that you install blindly from the 3.x GB DVD but you don't really know what you get. Also, as a very enthusiastic user who is willing to get involved, and who used to build open source software from sources to install in my box, I am dying to see package repositories full of pkgs being blogged in opensolaris-announce list (e.g. cdrecord-2.x.y package now available from Blastwave). That would be very handy, since it would make it clear for users who go to opensolaris.org that there is other software they can get and use immediately. If any of this makes sense, I hope to have contributed a little bit to making OpenSolaris a better OS. Meanwhile, if someone wants my help in something I actually *can* do, please let me know. (I cannot write device drivers, but if someone wants to patiently teach me, I am willing to learn :-) -- Douglas This message posted from opensolaris.org _______________________________________________ opensolaris-discuss mailing list [email protected]
