Well, outside of Sun... it goes a little something like this... Ref: http://blogs.sun.com/observatory/entry/distributions_of_opensolaris
"4. SXDE - Solaris Express Developer Edition - this distribution existed for some time as a special distribution created from SXCE with developer tools but it has been replaced by OpenSolaris 2008.05. OpenSolaris 2008.05 contains many developer tools including gcc, Sun Studio, debugging tools, AMP stack and more in the IPS repository. You can still download an older build of SXDE in case you want to give it a try, but future development will be done on the OpenSolaris distribution." Actually, SXCE came with developer tools + StarOffice and was pretty much SXDE before more formal testing/marketing. This changed shortly after SXDE was cancelled or superceded resulting back into a smaller DVD image and download. OpenSolaris 2008.05/.11 has the office suite and dev tools available through the use of IPS. Not as easy as getting that "one call that's all" type service where you download a DVD that comes with all the latest dev goodies from Sun. You'll probably want to look at this new post as well: http://www.sun.com/download/index.jsp?intcmp=hp2008aug19_students_download SXCE may be around for another few months, but once the new OpenSolaris distro gets off the ground... you might as well expect a new enterprise release of Solaris (or whatever they call it). ~ Ken Mays --- On Tue, 8/19/08, W.
