At some stage in the future, SXCE will go away. The reasons why SXCE
still exist are
1) Bootstrapping an ON build
In order to bootstrap build ON, necessary bits from SXCE are
needed. It is an easier
platform to build from, though it's also possible now to build
ON on OpenSolaris OS.
2) Processes
All Sun's current processes are set up to create an SXCE rather
than OpenSolaris OS. Until
this changes, it's a lot easier for many development teams in
Sun to focus their efforts on
SXCE (and the Nevada gate).
3) SPARC Platform
SXCE supports SPARC, OpenSolaris OS does not yet support this
platform. Rudimentary
support should be available for 2008.11
4) Testing
Many of the test suites in Sun are set up using technology that
exists in SXCE, but does not
have the equivalent functionality in OpenSolaris OS (yet). Until
that functionality exists in some
form (not necessarily an exact copy), SXCE needs to stay around
to allow all the testing teams
to properly perform their jobs in testing the latest development
bits.
Until these have been addressed adequately, SXCE will continue to
exist. There is no time line yet for when SXCE may be phased out, but
this alias (among others) will no doubt be the first to know.

Nevada has existed for longer than the OpenSolaris project. All those
releases you mention were essentially built from Nevada. Nevada is
just the code-name for the project gate working towards the next
release of Solaris (which you could say is OpenSolaris, currently).
