I have recently made the switch to Open Solaris for reasons similar to the ones you mentioned. My first report is that it went on the machine like butter on toast. With the exception of a networking problem, the system seems fine whereas in the past, from my limited experience, there was typically hassle involved. I mean we are talking about changing operating systems here - major surgery in my opinion.
There will be overhead in learning and adapting to the new system but it will pay off in the end. I think that you should persevere with Open Solaris. -- This message posted from opensolaris.org
