The whole process is very timing sensitive, especially if boot wait was never
set.

I don't think I saw anyone mention the suggestion to plug *both* the computer
and the
WRT into a *separate* hub/switch. At least one of the recovery pages on the
openwrt
wiki details this well.

The problem with plugging your computer into the WRT directly is that you might
miss the
fail safe window while your computer is waiting for the ethernet link to come
up and auto
negotiating port speeds etc. When using a separate hub, your computer will see
a constant
link to the hub.

Before applying power to the WRT, have a continuous ping running. Keep that
window
in the foreground and watch it. You should have a second window ready to hit
enter
on the tftp or telnet.

You will get batches of errors from the ping as the ARP requests time out.
That is
normal. As soon as the WRT boots far enough, it will start responding to the
pings and
then you can try your recovery procedure in the other window.

Unless there is something you really need from the existing configuration, I
would just
go ahead and TFTP a fresh copy of backfire or trunk as kamikaze is really old
at this point.

Are there such adapters on the market readily available?

For the WRT54 some soldering is required at least to attach to the board or
install
pins. You can buy cell phone USB serial cables off ebay. Look at the WRT54G
and serial
console pages on the openwrt Wiki.

Hope This Helps,
