The situation is much worse now.  "rescan" does not show any AP.

I put in a cron entry to reboot the RasPi every 2 hours, it worked for
a day or two.   Today even a reboot would not restore the WiFi
connection.  I just shut the unit OFF!

As mentioned in my OP, the USB WiFi dongle is  "Realtek Semiconductor
Corp. RTL8188CUS
802.11n WLAN Adapter"

Any pointers where to start looking would be much appreciated.
