I put in a cron entry to reboot the RasPi every 2 hours, it worked for
a day or two.   Today even a reboot would not restore the WiFi

Any pointers where to start looking would be much appreciated.

All issues I have had like this before with my RasPis has *always* been power related. I've had them work for months and then start getting network issues until I can not connect to an AP anymore. Replace the PSU, and once a USB/microUSB cable, and the Pi is working like a charm again. I must say though that I have been using the cheapish PSUs from "east" and it seems these fail over time.
