My main reasons for doing it are the same as for several other game studios - using swf for rendering in-game GUIs. It's a good choice to use vector graphics since the GUI will have to scale to the user-defined resolution, and it helps the production pipeline to use standard authoring tools where the designers can try their graphic/motion design directly.
