Plus Coin3D is dual-licensed GPL/commercial, so it isn't usable in many
cases where OSG is used. In fact, building the Inventor plugin against
Coin3D gives automatic parsing of VRML files without the OpenVRML
plugin, but as I said, it's GPL...

I agree, a small VRML parser would be ideal. Doesn't X3D have a lib we
could use? Isn't X3D the successor to VRML2?
