Hi Robert,

The problem is that we as developers have no control over these
"arbitrary" limitations. We can only accept them and move on. It's a
case of picking your battles - for me it doesn't make any difference.
On a related note, I think a single graphics context on both screens
would work too in dual-monitor mode (non horizontal span) even on Vista,
even if the horizontal span option doesn't exist in the drivers. We'd
just have to add the width of all screens and create a context with that
total width. I'll try it out and report back.
But then again, even on Linux osgViewer::View::setUpViewOnAllScreens()
will create multiple graphics contexts for multiple screens in
MultiViews mode. So I don't see that as an issue with Vista.

XP was also dog-slow when it came out. I remember when it came out, I
held off *two years* in installing it because it was so slow on
(then-)current hardware. IMVHO, Vista on current hardware is no where
near as slow (proportionally speaking) though there is still room for
improvement.
I say again, there is obviously room for improvement, and this will happen.
It's always the same thing when a new version of Windows comes out... I
guarantee that in 2 years, when a new version of Windows comes out, most
people will be saying "Why would I upgrade from Vista to this? There's
nothing new, it runs too slow, there are compatibility problems, etc."
That's what you get by having a closed development process, I'll concede
that, but that doesn't mean we should drop any OS developed closed-source.
I agree we have to keep companies in check and demand quality products
(that holds for both Vista and the nVidia drivers). I think with the
size of the OSG community, we should have a voice at nVidia/ATI/AMD same
as the game companies often do. Things might move a bit more if that
were the case.
Anyways... Getting off my soapbox now.
