That makes life so much easier by making it possible to point out different include and lib directories...

Then the right way to do it is to use "#include < al.h>" in your user
programs and then set up the proper -I flags when compiling, based on
the platform. Of course, those with GUI enviornments would click and point
their way to including the right path.
