Yes, the user's brain should be engaged, but if one is unfamiliar with the area, it isn't unreasonable to follow the router's directions.
If the router instructs you to "turn right in 500 feet" and you're driving along a cliff that extends for a few miles, that's one thing. If you're driving on a freeway, and the router announces that "you have reached your destination" *and you're still on the freeway" then that's something else entirely. I suppose you can pull over and start panning the map around trying to figure out for yourself how to get to where you want to go (thus engaging your brain),because at that point the router clearly won't help. The "last mile" observations are appropriate here.
