I seem to remember in the numerous articles i have read on cytotec aka
misoprostol (which are also still in boxes) that it at least is a synthetic
prostoglandin analogue (I think this means it is made in the lab but looks
structurally like the natural one). Historically many of the hormones used in
medicine have come from animals (pitocin, insulin, estrogen, progesterone to
name a few). I think animal rights activists (of which I and my daughters are
some) plus cost of maintaining the animals vs cost of lab production
(probably by genetically modified bacteria (just guessing here)) have tipped the
balance in favour of synthetic products. Also probably our growing awareness of
animal viruses, prions etc..
