Dear Sally,
I have seen several of these belly buttons and yes it is a little bit of vessel left over. I find that by just cleaning inside the button gently to keep it clean and dry (with cooled boiled water and a cotton bud),it will come off, just takes longer (up to four weeks). However, one baby had quite a big vessel and Mum took the little chap to the GP who used a silver nitrate stick on it, which worked and seemed to have no other side effects.
Sandy.
