I fail to see the difference between what you propose and what actually happened.

Assume they had made that announcement today, but product did not hit the shelf for
a couple of weeks.  What difference would it have made?  What different course of
action would you have taken if the product was NOT on the shelf when the
announcement hit?  How is that different from the action you're taking now?

I'd almost prefer to see it happen the way Palm did it.  When a product is on the shelf
it is far less likely to change than when it is still being designed.  It's far better 
than the
plethora of "announced" but unreleased Springboard Modules...
