AFAIK, all EZ hardware can do 16 shades, and OS3.5 is designed to give 16
shades, and it's the EZ chip itself which has the LCD controller on it, so
surely this mode is always be available...
If it's not, the only possibility I can see is that *some* EZ chips were
made with the older-style LCD controller onboard, but that doesn't seem very
likely.
