Jim,

>What customer is going to possibly order any one of the 30,000 items?
>Normally only a subset applies. But suppose they might order anything.
>How do they know what to order? Do they have a catalogue? If they do,
>why have that on the PDA? Why not just enter the product codes,

Because it is much faster to scan the bar code! I can also give immediate
feedback as to stock availability, pricing according to complex discount rules,
running totals, etc. All on a sales floor, or for sales reps calling on
customers, using bar coded catalogs or mobile showrooms or whatever.

>It is rarely **necessary** to have that many items. I know a lot of
>customers **want** them, but that's not the same thing.

What is wrong with giving them what they want? I can handle that many products
under Palm OS easily.
