Perhaps my experience is different than yours. I get support queries
from our customers who run into trouble syncing very large databases. In
most of those cases, it is not necessary to store all the records all
the time.

If your experience is otherwise, then so be it (perhaps it's more
focussed on specific areas), but I can quote numerous examples where it
was just plain silly. Our users or their clients wanted to store loads
of data, because that's their expectations from desktop apps, but it was
not often necessary (or even particularly useful).

I'm not saying it is never necessary, that would just be stupid.
