Cde Ndebele

Some years ago, working at Sandton Sun hotel, I had a chit chat with Wandile
Zothe who was host of the TV talk show, Newsline. I asked him about PAC
leadership, at the time of Stanley Mokgoba. He did not appraise the PAC
leadership. Instead, argued that the PAC has been lacking a visible leader.
This assessment has some resonance today on the current paralysis of the PAC. I
have observed that the PAC has some demoralized foot soldiers. I may refer to
them as the' walking wounded'. These ambulant soldiers do not seem to have a
commander in chief to give orders. We may blame the media. Admitedely, the
liberal media controlled by white liberals has some agenda to sideline the
mainstream liberation movements such as the PAC. But, my concern, chiefly on
the PAC leader is that he is not visible. At the funeral of Mkhwanazi most
people asked where is the PAC president. At the time when the MC asked a
commander in chief to speak, someone next to me, scoffed and said "the
commander in chief is the PAC president". Julias Malema got into the limelight
in 2008 when he was elected president of the ANCYL, from then henceforth he has
become more popular than the ANCYL. I am not espousing personal popularity at
the expense of the organization. However, I am persuaded that, if the PAC had a
leader who is well known within the general populace. We would be in a
different state of an affair today. Sometimes the PAC and its leader must be
controversial to glean public endorsement. I have argued, sometime ago, the
ANCYL stole our thunder on matters such as the land question and on economic
policy matters. I am quite happy to be part of a team that has robust debate on
important programs. But, I maintain that we need a strong man to survive the
turbulence. I also call for a united PAC against factionalism. Factionalism is
continuing to eat up the remnant left within the PAC. Zuma is invariably astute
in using all opportunities to ridicule the PAC. Last year, at the provincial
shop steward meeting of COSATU, one spokesperson for the federation warned
members to guard against losing ground like in 1960 when the PAC supposedly
stole ANC's anti pass campaign. Currently, the newly elected ANC deputy
president has gone in to the revival spree of the ANC. I must add that the
ANC'S disillusioned members are gradually regaining the confidence which they
had. Why are we acquiescing to our adversities. I am not suggesting that we
should ridicule comrades, but we should have strong leaders to lead us into our
historic mission. Can we emulate the DP which was at the lowest electoral
margins in 1994 (2 %). Someone at the funeral " the PAC should strive to be an
official opposition in 2014". This sound like a wishful imagination if the
current infighting and a lack of visionary leadership exists. Two termites
capable of destroying the PAC structure are

1. Factionalism

2. Non visible leadership
